The Swedish alcohol monopoly system is once again the topic of debate, this time precipitated by the news that hard liquor is being sold in Germany in bag-in-a-boxes (like they do with cheap wine). Should these be allowed to be sold in Sweden, as they would defeat the policy of making alcohol too expensive to get drunk on? Of course, EU trade rules should make that question moot.

Fr�gor kommer fr�n h�r.1. B�r Systembolaget finnas kvar?

Javisst b�r det. Att dricka f�r mycket alkohol inte �r h�lsosamt. R�ker f�r mycket inte �nnu �r h�lsosamt, s� d�rf�r tycker jag att vi b�r ocks� har ett systembolag f�r tobak och snuss, som �r �ppet bara m�ndags tills fredags, 9-17. Inga cigaretter b�r s�ljas p� helger! Att �ta f�r mycket ocks� �r j�tte daligt f�r h�lsan, men mat �r nu s� billig och det k�ps s� mycket, och vi har s� m�nga feta m�nniskor p� gator, att jag skulle g�rna se ett systembolag f�r mataff�rer och naturligtviss h�gre skatt p� mat. Vi b�r fasta p� helgen.

Vad jag tycker helt inte om �r att det fortfarande finns platsar var man kan �ta, r�ka och dricka samtidigt p� helger: Restauranger! Vi b�r st�nga dem i helger, annars skulle rika m�nniskor forts�tta att g�ra saker som fattige m�nniskor har inte r�d med.

2. Leder vin- och spritboxar till �kat supande?

Ja. Liten, men det leder framf�rallt till s�mre bakrus. B�ttre att ha mindre skatt p� sprit s� att vi kan ha r�d med b�ttre alkohol och allts� inte �r tvungen att vara sjukskriven n�sta dag.

3. Vilka konsekvenser (om n�gra) tror du det skulle bli om Systembolaget avskaffades?

Jag tror inte att Svenskar skulle dricka mycket mer, utan b�ttre alkohol. Men dem b�r dricka mer. Just nu dricker dem mycket mindre �n EUs genomsnitt.

The problem with Swedes and drinking is that people drink to get wasted. Really wasted. In the end of 1870 people were drinking themselves to death. A referendum on total prohibition took place 1922. 889,000 vote for and 925,000 against. Narrow margins there.

Systembolaget exists because of the principle that there should be no private profit in the selling of alcohol. This is to ensure that stores don't sell to people below the age of 20/persuede people to buy as much as possible.

In 1965 they allowed "mellan�l" (4.5%) to be sold in supermarkets etc. In teh following years the alcohol consumption rose from 5.5 litres to 7.7 litres/person. That, plus the fact that supermarkets are sloppy at checking ID's (and thereby sold a lot to underaged people) made the government decide to move back the mellan�l to Systembolaget.

And I'm not even mentioning the costs for society here...
