UK PM Tony Blair's wake-up call to the European parliament is must-see TV, especially for the panning shots of stone-faced parliamentarians. (full text of speech, news story)Posted at 03:01 PM

That irrational fear others reserve for snakes, spiders or rats — I have it for towards jellyfish. And now it turns out they're smarter and more advanced than we thought. The fuckers. I always knew they had it i for me. Expect Hollywood to take it from here — "Deep Throat: Revenge of the Cnid".Posted at 09:12 AM

Guided tours are the a big part of podcasting's future. Take for example this guided tour of Glasgwegian creative hotspots. And then there is the alternate one of the MoMA.But what I really really want now is a GPS-based iPod with WiMAX, so that I can check if there is anything interesting to see or do wherever I happen to be, and then hear about it in real time. Every block could have its own hyperlocal news channel. "Coincidentally", Intel does WiMAX.

We've decided that Bloggforum 3 is going to happen somewhere in Stockholm on Saturday, November 19, 2005. This way, the notoriously forward-looking Swedes will probably be able to make it. Hard to imagine it now, but it will be dark, cold and snowy then, and you will want nothing better than to spend the day curled up with fellow bloggers.Nothing else has been decided, though. Decisions such as format, content, sponsors and venue will be left blissfully until after the summer. That said, if you know of any potential sponsors, do get in touch.

Microsoft Windows + Intel = Wintel.Apple Macintosh + Intel = ...
Mactel? Intelitosh? Macintel? It took a week but the consensus is definitely settling on Macintel.
BTW, one little teensy piece of analysis I have not seen elsewhere is this: For those with a large inventory of "pro" software, buying a Macintel box could prove quite costly upfront, as the expectation is that the universal binary versions that run on them will come as paid upgrades for that type of software. Since the pro stuff is certainly not what you want to be running in translation mode (if it's possible at all), the best tactic might be to buy a PowerPC just before the Mactels hit and then upgrade the software gradually. After all, it's not as if the PPCs are slow right now, and all computers are obsolete in the future.

There are two reasons to read Hamilton Naki's obituary in this week's Economist: Because his life is inspiring, and because the writing is inspired.Posted at 07:28 PM

Boing Boing already linked to the Chicago Tribune article about Stanley Kubrick's early stint as a photojournalist for Look magazine (with a gallery of amazing photographs of Chicago.)Here is some more background on these formative years, and some very prescient photographs, in light of his later films.

Stolen wholesale from Andy Fugard's site (it's that funny):"I'm scared in my own apartment. I'm scared 24 hours a day. But not necessarily in New York. I actually feel pretty comfortable in New York. I get scared like in Sweden. You know, it's ... kind of empty, they're all drunk. Everything works. You know, if you stop at a stop light and don't turn your engine off, people come over and talk to you about it. You go to the medicine cabinet and open it up and there will be a little poster saying: "In case of suicide - call..." You turn on the TV, there's an ear operation. These things scare me. New York? No."

The nugget came after Jobs's show: PCs won't be allowed to run OS X, but Apple "won't do anything to preclude" Macs booting both OS X and Windows, says Apple's SVP Schiller. This will remove yet another obstacle to switching.Posted at 06:47 PM

Sudoku is rapidly becoming the mathematical analogue to the crossword puzzle — today SvD adds the puzzle to its culture section, offering a prize for the correct solution. But unlike crossword puzzles, the solution to Sudoku puzzles is trivial, programmatically. Many solvers exist, including a Dashboard widget...Posted at 03:31 PM
